What is a Backflow Device?

In general, backflow devices or assemblies are used to protect the water supply from any potential contamination. This includes, but is not limited to boilers, irrigation systems, soda carbonators, ice machines, and fire protection.

A backflow device for an irrigation system, for example, prevents the reverse flow of contaminated water from the sprinklers from getting into the city water supply. Lawns and landscapes contain fertilizers, chemicals, bacteria, dirt, fungus, and multiple other hazards that could leach into an irrigation head, and be drawn back into the drinking water supply if the source is not properly backflow protected.

Utility Department Requirements

To prevent backflow, a code-approved mechanical backflow prevention device must be installed in all applications where backflow could occur. These devices must be tested annually for proper operation per the Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation, Division of Water. Local utility companies must comply with the rules and regulations set forth for public health and safety.

Advanced Backflow Inspections has certified backflow specialists that are able to repair and test fireline, domestic and irrigation devices to ensure they are up to code. We even submit the results to the proper government agency for you. Because testing and repairs are all we do, we are our able to keep our costs lower, in comparison to that of a typical plumber.
